Biography | The Mufti of Jerusalem and the President of the Supreme Moslem Council, al-Husseini, was the most prominent and popular leader of the Palestinian national struggle during the British Mandate era. To escape persecution by the British authorities, he was forced to seek refuge in Lebanon in summer 1937, then to Iraq and Germany via Turkey. During World War II, he adopted the “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” doctrine as policy, betting that the Axis powers would support the struggle of the Palestinian people against British colonialism and the Zionist movement. However, following the Nakba, al-Husseini gradually lost the popular influence he once enjoyed.
