Elizabeth M. Holt is associate professor of Arabic at Bard College, where she codirects the Middle Eastern Studies Program. She is the author of Fictitious Capital: Silk, Cotton, and the Rise of the Arabic Novel (New York: Fordham University Press, 2017).
