Highlight | Despite the displacement of most of its population during the Nakba, Haifa quickly regained its educational and cultural role. Toward the late 1990s, an independent Palestinian cultural scene began emerging, especially with the establishment by civil society organizations of independent Palestinian cultural institutions outside the control of the state. This also reflected the desire of Palestinians in Israel to reconnect with other Palestinian communities and with the Arab world.
