Biography | A pioneer of contemporary Palestinian visual art, Ismail Shammut was born in the city of Lydda. Following the Nakba, he was displaced along with his family to the Gaza Strip, where he began practicing painting early. After spending three years at Cairo’s Academy of Fine Arts, he held his first personal exhibition in Gaza City in 1953. He later gained more artistic experience after studying for two years at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. In his practice and career, Shammut considered his people’s tragedy and aspirations, established the PLO’s art department, co-established the Union of Palestinian Artists, and was elected Secretary-General and the first Secretary-General of the General Union of Arab Artists.
