IPS organizes and participates in international seminars, conferences and book fairs, the most important of which is the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) conference, held annually in the United States and attended by 1,500 scholars and analysts. Since the Madrid conference, IPS’s panel at MESA has highlighted issues in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, especially concerning the final status negotiations and the future of Jerusalem.
The Institute also holds restricted, brainstorming seminars that bring together senior IPS research staff, selected guests, and outside scholars. The IPS core group includes leading Palestinian intellectuals, many of whom are involved in some capacity or other in the peace negotiations. The seminars usually use current events as a starting point for discussions and cover a range of topics including final status issues and negotiating strategies. Condensed reports of the seminars are distributed on a restricted basis. Some of the discussion
groups’ conclusions also are reported in the journals.
