With great sorrow we announce the passing of our dear friend and colleague Basil Aql, the Deputy Chair of the IPS Board of Trustees, who died in Beirut on the evening of Wednesday, December 2, 2020. The Chair of the IPS Board of Trustees, Secretary and members of the board, members of the Executive Committee, and members of the US Board of Directors, the General Director, and all staff members of IPS offices in Beirut, Ramallah and Washington, observe the passing of Basil Aql, member of the Palestinian National Council, and the Central Council of the PLO.
Aql was an advisor to the late Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat and a special advisor to President Mahmoud Abbas. He was one of the early founders of the Institute for Palestine Studies, and was closely associated with its continued activities and service to the Palestine cause, and the struggle of the Palestinian people for self-determination. The passing of Basil Aql is a great loss to the Institute for Palestine Studies.
